Keeping an “Emergency Hosptial Bag”
One of the things that was frustrating during the years of trips to the hospital with Elizabeth was that in the beginning we weren’t prepared. This meant that things happened that made life even more difficult. Cell phones died, water bottles cost a fortune in the hospital, breath starts to stink… You get the picture. 🙂 SO, eventually I got smart and put together a bag that I could grab or I could have a friend or one of my other children grab to bring to the hosptial. It has evolved for our specific needs but I am betting that most of the items are pretty universal.
Here is what is in our bag.
- A comfortable change of clothes for both Derrek and I. (Comfy enough to sit in for an entire day and maybe sleep in) (Oh and Underwear and socks too), I also slipped a pair of flat shoes in mine for when I arrived at the hospital wearing work clothes and heels.
- A toiletry bag with deoderant, toothbrush, comb, clips for my hair, makeup, soap, chapstick and lotion. (the little tiny samples you get mailed to you work well! You can also buy them at stores like Walmart, Target, CVS and Walgreens)
- Water Bottles, a few snacks that will stay fresh enough.
- Cash
- Cell phone charger
- Things to pass the time, Sudoku, knitting, book or nook etc.
These are just the things that work for us and I have to say, I have NEVER been sorry that I had it. Please comment on what you have or would put in your bag.

You forgot back up meds for your beloved in case the staff in the ER are clueless enough to let a severe heart failure patient go with out his diuretic all day long, resulting in said patient coughing all night long from increased pulmonary edema.
Bitter? Not at all….LOL.

Tiffany, you are so right! I can’t believe I forgot that….medications for anybody that may need them…. for the patient. And for the parents. I get sample packets of my thyroid medicine from my doc and keep a stash in the bag….. as well as tylenol and ibuprofen. And bitter? Yup me too!
